Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...

Anterior Disc Displacement and the Superior Head of Lateral Pterygoid Muscle: A Case-Control Study International Journal of Morphology
Pompei Filho,Horácio; Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela; Guimarães,Antonio Sergio.
The objective of this study was to assess the association between an increase in the proportion of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (SHLP) inserted into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc and the presence of anterior disc displacement diagnosed by using MRI. We analyzed 75 images of patients with anterior displacement and 75 controls with normal relationship between the mandibular head and the articular tubercle also diagnosed by MRI. Levels of insertion were measured. Descriptive and analytic statistics were calculated. Analyses of differences were made by Fischer's exact test and also were calculated clinical significance (OR, CI = 95%). The average insertion of SHLP was 71.14% (SD 14.13) in controls and 67.80% (SD.16.23) in cases...

Clinical Evaluation of Fibularis Tertius Muscle Prevalence International Journal of Morphology
Ramirez,Daysi; Gajardo,Carolina; Caballero,Paula; Zavando,Daniela; Cantín,Mario; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
The fibularis tertius muscle (FTM) in man has been developed over time to acquire subsequent bipedal gait. The FTM functions as a crucial contributor in dorsiflexion and eversion, postulated over the years as a stabilizer of the talocrural joint, avoiding forced investment and protecting the anterior talofibular ligament. The literature describes that FTM is absent in 10% of cases, with no data on Chilean population. A study of surface anatomy in 168 young subjects, 60% female and 40% male students at the Universidad de Talca, Chile, with a mean age of 20.6 ± 1.68 years, was conducted. The presence of FTM was identified following the implementation of a clinical assessment protocol that determines the presence of muscle on the basis of a progression called...

Morales,Juan-Pablo; Roa H,Ignacio; Zavando,Daniela; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
In situations where the skeletal remains found are too fragmented, it is necessary to assess the human origin of such remains; for this purpose, various parameters are used, both anatomical and histological. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the various histomorphometric parameters to differentiate human from non-human bones, to further construct discriminatory functions that allow interspecies classification. Tibia bones sections from human, bovine, pig, hen, cat, and dog species were used, processed through conventional histological techniques and observed under the microscope with a 40x magnification, analyzing the Haversian Canal Density parameters by mm2, Diameter of the Haversian Canal and the Diameter of the Haversian System which...

López,María José; Zárate,Michael; Cantín,Mario; Zavando,Daniela; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
The vocal muscle is a striated muscle with important functions in the emission of laryngeal sound and physiology of the voice. Therefore the knowledge of its constitution is the basis for the prevention and management of voice disorders. We used 10 samples from the middle third of vocal muscles obtained from autopsies of 6 male and 4 female subjects aged between 36 and 71 years. The samples were analyzed with BA-F8 monoclonal antibody to slow type I fibers, and antimyosin HC monoclonal antibody and antimyosin fast clone MY-32 antibody for types IIA, IIB, IIX, and neonatal fibers. We determined the distribution of the muscle fiber types and morphometric characteristics, evaluating the differences by sex and age group. The human vocal muscle presented a...

Acuña,Luis; Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela; Elgueta,Samanta; Velásquez,Luis; Vilos,Cristian; Cantín,Mario.
The administration of microencapsulated drug in a matrix acid poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) by intramuscular (IM) in humans has been approved by the FDA for various applications though it is not clear what effect they have on the morphological parameters of muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological changes in the skeletal muscle tissue with their use. We used 12 adult female Sprague Dawley rats (Rattus novergicus) that were injected into their right gastrocnemius muscle belly with: sterile vehicle solution (G1, n = 4), 0.5 mg PLGA microparticle (G2, n = 4) and 0.75 mg PLGA microparticle (G3, n = 4), both dissolved in a sterile vehicle solution. At 14 days post injection the number and diameter of muscle fibers, the level...

Observation of Sex Chromatin in Exhumed Bones, Evaluation of their Diagnosis Value International Journal of Morphology
Muñoz,Patricia; Roa,Ignacio; Zavando,Daniela; Suazo Galdames,Iván.
Observation of sexual chromatin has shown to be very helpful in gender forensic diagnosis. In the present study we analyzed the diagnosis performance of the method in, non-treated or treated with conventional bone techniques, exhumed bone pieces. We used long bones of male and female individuals, the method applied is described in Suazo et al. (2010). In the non-treated exhumed pieces, the general accuracy of the method was 75%, while in the treated pieces the method was inapplicable due to the lack of cells in the tissue. Our results suggest that it is possible to determine the sex of aged human bones buried under different conditions through a fast and simple histological method, but the treatment with physical and chemical means eliminates the remaining...
